Patient Story: Hope for a new method of urethral tissue regeneration

Rare urethral conditions can have a profound impact on patients’ physical and psychological well-being, underscoring the need for innovative and less invasive treatments.

Our team from the European Association of Urology (EAU) interviewed a patient who was diagnosed with rare localised amyloidosis, a disease in which abnormal proteins build up in tissues and organs, affecting his urethra. His experience with multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, and the long-term challenges of managing his condition highlights the importance of the STRONG-UR approach, which aims to develop personalised urethral tissue reconstruction using 3D printing and bioink. STRONG-UR is searching for regenerative solutions to improve treatment options and quality of life for future patients.
