Researchers from STRONG-UR are co-editing a new special Research Topic in Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, under the journal’s Biofabrication subsection. It aims to establish urethral tissue engineering (UTE) as a promising and viable treatment strategy in urethral reconstruction, with a strong emphasis on innovative research approaches and translational relevance.
The editors are particularly interested in original contributions exploring novel reports and techniques within UTE, including in vitro studies as well as preclinical animal models. A particular emphasis will be placed on identifying new possibilities and methodologies, such as innovative scaffolds, extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions, de/recellularisation procedures, stem cell applications, and the incorporation of advanced bioprinting technologies. Additionally, the scope will highlight the development and application of novel in vitro and animal models that more accurately replicate the complex pathophysiology of urethral disorders, thereby enhancing the translational relevance and predictive value of experimental findings.
Key themes include, but are not limited to:
- Novel scaffold materials for UTE
- Advancements in ECM and de/recellularization techniques
- Innovative applications of stem and progenitor cells in urethral regeneration
- Innovations in 3D and 4D bioprinting technologies for UTE
- The role and impact of extracellular vesicles in UTE
- Design and validation of animal models that better simulate human urethral diseases
- Translational studies bridging preclinical findings with clinical implementation in urethral reconstruction
The call is open to a broad range of article types, such as Original Research, Review, Mini Review, Methods, Perspective, Hypothesis and Theory, and others. All submissions will undergo peer review, and article processing charges (APCs) apply for accepted papers. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a growing body of knowledge that may shape future clinical practices in urethral reconstruction.
